Department of Horticulture and Landscape Design

The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Design was established on 1/10/2005, first under the name of the Department of Plant Production, and the name was changed to the Department of Horticulture in the same year. In 2009, the name was changed to the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Design. Its importance lies in preparing competent agricultural engineers in their field of specialization and spreading the horticultural culture in society. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. Kifaya Ghazi Sa'eed.

The study is characterized by two main parts: theoretical lessons and the practical part (field and laboratory). Since its establishment, the college administration has sought to provide scientific laboratories equipped with the latest laboratory and field equipment, and the approval of research projects is one of the requirements for students’ graduation.

The department is equipped with specialized laboratories (the graduate studies laboratory, the tissue culture laboratory, the general plant laboratory) and experimental field fields (a greenhouse, a wooden canopy, 5 greenhouses, orchard fields for various evergreen and deciduous fruit trees, vegetable fields, a palm grove that includes 9 varieties, an orchard Olives) and a laboratory for mushroom production was attached to the department with a production capacity of 12 tons per meal. An apiary was also established to produce honey bees and is used as field observations for students.

The department’s mission includes preparing competent cadres of agricultural engineers specialized in the fields of fruit, vegetable and ornamental sciences and garden Design and design, who are qualified to keep pace with the needs of the local and regional labor market and who are able to conduct advanced scientific research and transfer scientific and applied agricultural results to society and the environment to keep pace with global developments in the field of agriculture, and in a way that serves the principle of the college. Preparing a department database for educational and research aspects and faculty members’ data.
Establishing a system for continuous monitoring and evaluation in the department with the aim of ensuring continuous development of performance in the fields of education, scientific research, community service and environmental development.

Department of Field Crops

The Field Crops Department was established in 2010 as a response to the demand of the labor market, as Kirkuk Governorate, with its various agricultural regions, is one of the advanced governorates in the production of major field crops. The department studies all sciences related to the cultivation, maintenance, breeding, and improvement of plants included in field crops. The department is provided with advanced laboratories, in addition to allocating fields within Agricultural research and experiments station for the department’s students. In 2015, a master’s study was established in the department, and in 2022 an integrated study was presented to create a doctoral study in the department, and the necessary approvals are awaited for that.

A cooperation agreement was signed with the Agricultural Training Extension Center in Kirkuk. The terms of the agreement include the department’s teachers giving lectures, participating in the training courses that the center holds for farmers in the governorate, and supervising the Ministry of Agriculture’s programs implemented in the center’s experimental fields. The department’s teachers also participate in scientific committees within And outside the university, the center’s fields are actual viewing stations for undergraduate students and centers for conducting research for postgraduate students. The department is headed by Prof. Dr. Khattab Abdullah Mohammed.

The Vision

Vertical expansion of land yields and an increase in production mechanisms for field agricultural crops in the governorate.

The Mission

Preparing agricultural cadres of competent engineers in the field of field crop sciences (raising field crops, producing field crops, and crop technology, in addition to oil crops, industrial and medicinal crops, and weed control) graduating from the department to work in light of the tasks and duties that are required to be carried out in the vision and goals of the department in order to reach farmers. The governorate, especially the farmers of strategic crops, to ensure an increase in agricultural density in fertile and moderately fertile lands and to encourage interconnected and successive joint cultivation in different parts of Kirkuk Governorate.

Graduating a group of trained agricultural engineers qualified to achieve the department’s goals.
The department's staff is working to introduce and develop improved genetic compositions and increase the momentum and effectiveness of agricultural operations in order to increase the effectiveness of agricultural patterns and methods.
Establishing the basics of the approach to organic agriculture and integrated pest management in accordance with globally applicable trends.
The department adopts the idea of adopting development programs with the responsible authorities in the governorate regarding developing the cultivation of grains and legumes from the rural area in the governorate and developing the cultivation and production of high-quality cotton and all strategic crops.
Working to introduce modern technologies in the department’s various fields of agricultural machinery and equipment and developing conservation agriculture to ensure energy savings and an increase in production.
Developing curricula and study programs and linking theory with practical application by implementing research projects for primary and postgraduate students and teaching staff in the college’s fields and facilities, and introducing new agricultural sciences and knowledge into the curricula to raise the student’s scientific competence.
Organizing scientific symposiums and seminars and participating in scientific conferences and symposiums by presenting research and studies inside and outside the country.
Working to exchange experiences, visits, study programs, and academic sabbaticals for members of the department inside and outside the country whenever possible, and carrying out joint research with colleges of agriculture and other research and scientific centers and institutions.

Department of Animal Production

The department was established in 2005 with the aim of training and graduating scientific cadres specialized in the sciences of livestock and their various types. Study in the Animal Production Department includes all sciences related to poultry birds, sheep, cows, buffalo, fish, and others, which have a direct relationship to human daily food, clothing, and their various needs. The duration of study in the department is four years. The student discusses theoretical lessons and practical observations, as the college administration has provided scientific laboratories equipped with various devices and mini fields for various types of livestock so that the student can watch and practice the theoretical information he receives, which qualifies him to establish various animal projects such as raising poultry, raising cows, fattening calves, raising sheep and goats, and raising Fish and supervision of fields and civil projects. Students are taken on field trips outside and within the governorate to increase the level of field observations and scientific experience for the students.

The master's degree was established in the Department of Animal Production in 2013, then the doctoral degree was created in 2018, and the first doctorate degree was awarded in 2021, making it the first doctorate degree awarded at the University of Kirkuk. The department is headed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Qani' Hussein Amin.

The department's mission includes preparing competent agricultural engineers in the field of livestock sciences (poultry raising, sheep, goats, and cows) and urging them to use modern methods.

1. Preparing students to be competent engineers qualified to undertake small production projects on their own
2. Providing the student with scientific knowledge and scientific skills that contribute to the growth and development of the animal production sciences sector and cooperating with veterinarians in combating spoiled meat and products.
3. Preparing research and studies related to developing fields (poultry and sheep)

Department of Soil and Water Resources Sciences

The Department of Soil Sciences was established in 2010, and the development process aimed to supply the labor market with graduates specialized in studying the layers of soil that are exploited by plants of various types, from herbaceous to forest trees. The department’s vocabulary includes studying the emergence and formation of these layers, their classification, their physical and chemical characteristics, and the organisms that live in them, as well as their influence on various Surrounding environmental factors. The department also studies steps to improve soils. Later, the department was developed as it began to study water resources along with soil, and the name was created for that.

The master's degree study was introduced in the department in 2020, and the department has future plans to introduce a doctoral study after completing the requirements for its introduction. The scientific department participated in the Dutch Nuffic programs on water management and soil improvement, and the department's teaching staff has effective participation within the scientific committees and discussions inside and outside the university.

The department has two specialized laboratories in which all practical curricula for academic subjects included in the department’s curriculum are studied. It also organizes frequent scientific visits for its students to various sites, soils, and irrigation projects to increase students’ knowledge. The department is headed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Salah Jassim Amin.

Excellence in education methods to provide society with qualified cadres to develop healthy food production from available natural resources through sustainable agricultural development while preserving the environment and community service, and capable of implementing agricultural policies and competing locally and globally.

The Mission:

The department's program contributes to achieving the college's mission, which seeks to discover, disseminate and apply knowledge to manage natural resources efficiently in order to provide food and sustainable agricultural development while preserving the environment. The department is also interested in preparing qualified cadres to develop agricultural production and serve the community by conducting applied research to find solutions to community problems in the agricultural field, especially the fields of soil and water resources, as well as participating in implementing extension programs to transfer knowledge and the results of applied research and participating with other departments locally, regionally and internationally to develop education and research. scientific,

-Keeping pace with development plans and expansion in the reclamation of desert and saline soils, which require special skills.
- Raising the quality of newly reclaimed soils and preserving them.
- Maximizing the return from the soil and water unit while rationalizing water use and preventing soil and water pollution.

7• Develop a strategy for scientific research linked to the need to increase the yield from the soil and water unit and the sustainable increase in the area of agricultural land to meet the needs of society.

Department of Forestry

The Department of Forestry was established in the academic year (2013-2014), and the department awards a bachelor’s degree in Forestry over a period of four years during which the student acquires sciences related to forests, starting with planting trees and shrubs, then sustaining and investing in their various products, along with how to preserve them from impacts. The department is headed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Mateen Yilmaz Izaldin

Working to expand and sustain green cover because of its economic, protective and social benefits for the region and its residents by graduating specialized and trained cadres in forest sciences.

The Mission

Strengthening the department’s contribution to the advancement of the agricultural, forestry and industrial situation in terms of the use of wood as a raw material in many major industries and the environment as one of the main factors contributing to its preservation, through the department’s various scientific activities, the production of the teaching staff, and the good scientific level of its graduates.

The Objectives

1. Graduating specialized cadres trained in various forest sciences capable of serving society.
2. Developing scientific curricula related to forest sciences and other sciences that influence them.
3, Contributing to solving forest problems inside Iraq through research, studies and discussion circles.

Department of Poultry Sciences

The Department of Poultry Sciences was established on 5/3/2023 and studies began in the academic year (2023/2024) in a step aimed at focusing on this important aspect of animal wealth and deepening studies on it, especially since Kirkuk Governorate is one of the leading governorates in poultry meat production. And  eggs and the breeding of various poultry birds. The department awards a bachelor’s degree in various poultry sciences. The department is equipped with 3 fields for raising various poultry breeds with two specialized laboratories. It is hoped that after the graduation of the first batch of the department’s students, a master’s and doctoral study will be developed in it due to the presence of an integrated staff and the possibilities for innovation. The department is headed by Lecturer Dr. Sarmad Talib Abdulaziz.
