The University of Kirkuk Organizes a Seminar on Chemistry in Service of Agriculture

The College of Agriculture organized a seminar titled “Chemistry in Service of Agriculture,” attended by faculty members and students.

The seminar featured a lecture by Dr. Dhikra Ahmed Hassan, who emphasized the pivotal role of chemistry in advancing modern agriculture. She explained how chemistry provides the tools and knowledge to improve crop quality and increase productivity. By understanding chemical interactions in soil, water, and plants, scientists can develop fertilizers, pesticides, and treatment methods that contribute to more sustainable and efficient farming practices.

Dr. Hassan added that chemistry opens broad horizons for repurposing agricultural waste instead of disposing of it in environmentally harmful ways. Through chemical analysis and bio-treatment techniques, this waste can be transformed into:

1- Renewable energy sources (e.g., biogas).

2- Raw materials for industrial applications.

3- Organic fertilizers to enhance soil fertility.

This approach not only reduces environmental damage but also supports a circular economy, aligning with global efforts to promote sustainability in agriculture.
